Password to open, written here

Protect a PDF

No files yet. Drop them above. They stay on your computer.

Protect PDF writes a new file that requires a password to open. Drop a PDF that this tab can already read, type a user password twice, and download. Encryption uses AES-256 in the browser. We do not store the password. If you forget it, we cannot recover the file. There is no unlocker or cracker here.

The original on disk stays readable. Close the tab and the working files are gone. Do not reuse a password you use for email.

They stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded. If you forget the password, we cannot recover the file.

How to password-protect a PDF in your browser

  1. Drop one PDF that opens in this tab already.
  2. Enter a password and confirm it.
  3. Protect PDF. Encryption runs locally.
  4. Download the new file. Keep the password somewhere you will not lose.

Protect a PDF without uploading

Online “lock PDF” sites that upload see the document before they encrypt it, which defeats the point. This page never receives the file. We also will not build an unlock tool.

Questions

What if I forget the password?

We cannot recover it. Nothing is stored here. Keep a copy of the unprotected original if you might need it.

Is this a PDF password cracker?

No. This page only writes a new encrypted file. It will not unlock someone else’s PDF.

Does protect PDF upload my document?

No. AES-256 wrapping happens in this browser. Close the tab and the working files are gone.

Will the original on disk be locked too?

No. You download a new file. The one you dropped stays as it is.

Why must the PDF already be readable?

We cannot encrypt what we cannot open. Unlock an existing password on your computer first, then protect a fresh copy here.
